Chrysalis – Original Drawing

9″ x 11.4″ (22.8 x 28.9 cm) original drawing, Chrysalis

Colored pencil on Strathmore acid-free, 80 lb. (130 gsm) natural white paper, unframed.

Third-century BC Chinese philosopher Master Zhuang (Zhuangzhi) wrote, “I dreamed I was a butterfly, flitting around in the sky; then I awoke. Now I wonder: Am I a man who dreamt of being a butterfly, or am I a butterfly dreaming that I am a man?”

This drawing of a woman lying in bed, wrapped in magenta sheets like a chrysalis, juxtaposes the magical interior life of a dreamer and visionary with the surroundings of the everyday, existing in a state of surreality where both waking and dreaming life transform the other.

Part of the Art Every Day project, Day 115 (April 25).

Signed and dated in graphite on the verso.

Best displayed matted and framed, away from direct sunlight. Prints will be available soon.
